Granda Elliot’s Nutcracker December 14, 2008

One-time recording artist Elliot Small, better known to visitors to the New Orleans French Quarter as Grandpa Elliot, displays some serious harmonica chops for us on this mixup of a Nutcracker Suite and the William Tell Overture.

This Playing for Change video is now the leading driver of visitors to this site. Grandpa Eilliot is apparently quite an internet celebrity. But internet hits don’t pay the bills, and until he sets up a paypal donation button all I ask is this: if you find yourself Christmas shopping downtown, spare a buck for this street legend. Imagine what the quarter would be like without street musicians (particularly the talented ones).

If you go to the Quarter in New Orleans be sure to go and see and hear the wonderful street musicians. It is surely a wonderful experience. I was there in Oct for Halloween and just walking in the area of Jackosn Sq and the sights and sounds of the street musicians is just great. You can’t help but love the history of New Orleans. Everyone there is so freindly and full of caring and love. You can meet all eclectic folks who live and work in the French Quarter. Appreciate New Orleans. It is a great place. Marcy

Help me to locate the 3 men I saw on the “around the world” Stand By Me, video that were from New Orleans. I am 60 years old, I have lived in New Orleans area all my life. I frequent the Quarter as much as possible but have never seen these 3. Granpa Elliot, Washboard Chaz and Roberto Luti. Please tell me all you know about each and where and when do the play???

I took a trip with my boyfriend to NO in September of 2007. We found Grandpa on the corner of Toulouse and (something) and fell in love! I’ve even fantasized about flying him to Texas to perform at my wedding. Since then I saw he came to Austin for South by Southwest SXSW film/music/interactive festival. He’s turned into a sensation! And I feel lucky to have found him that night. I’m hoping he’ll be at the NO Jazz and Heritage Festival

Blaming random entertainers like Eminem, Marlyn Manson, Slipknot and violent video games for every single problem teens have.

Cyber-bullying is now the whipping boy…..sigh.
